6-7th July 2004 - Fire - Great Howard Street, Liverpool

  • well unfortunately most of my pictures never turned out (!!) so instead ive had to put in stills taken from Video footage - obviously its not that great but hey ho! few captions this time - full attendance at the bottom!

The south side of the building whilst still a four pumper, a 135 ladder is being pitched against the wall of the wharehouse. At this point, very little smoke can be seen issuing.

The 135 is pitched, firefighters are ready to try and gain entry to the building.

A firefighter can just be seen behind the cpl, at the head of the ladder. He is trying to force entry using a sledge hammer - still very little smoke!

Several minutes later, the CPL has moved to the north side of the building - it was make pumps 5 at this point followed shortly afterwards by Make Pumps 10

S8 Old Swans Volvo arrives on scene

By now the smoke is much thicker and is spiralling out of the structure.

Flames vent through the roof of the building, flames shothigh into the night sky as the next few pictures show

due to the rapid spread of fire, a further aerial appliance was ordered. This is the north side of the building showing the first CPL west 1 Bravo

North 3 Bravo (Croxteth) arrives to assist

T655CCK supplies the water as N3B sets up ready for use - W1B is still attacking the fire in the backround

The large building in the centre of the picture is an old wharehouse, and was not directly involved in the incident - although the walls did get very hot and apparently there is a big crack near the base! At one point this incident was using 5 main jets and a CPL moniter fed from the nearby Leeds-Liverpool Canal.

Here you can see C1-Z with GPU pod (which doubles as MPU) and C3-2

    • S11 (Allerton) - (Called from standby duties)

  • K reg Dennis SS, now in the reserve fleet arrives outside the blazing premises

  • Just visible between the two machines, a lick of flame exits the side of the building. Roof tiles were constantly falling from the building which made firefighting operations dangerous.

  • The building is seen shortly after I arrived. The road was impassible because of the huge amounts of smoke.

  • Make Pumps 4 - CPL's 1 - Boundary St Cafe & Market - 29/9/02

  • West 1 Bravo seen here attempting to "Ventilate The Roof". - Central 3-Bravo must have been either off the run or at another job for this appliance to be called. - Yes that is a canal boat sitting on the road!!

Here can be seen the building with smoke pouring from the roof and from the entrance behind the Sabre. In the meantime W1B is still ventilating the roof.

Another view of the Fireground. In this view is a Scania (C1), Dennis SS (C3) and a Volvo (W1).

    MAKE PUMPS 8, CPL'S 3 - 13/06/02 Hawthorne Road, Bootle

  • This view shows the shear size of the blaze. The building was approx. 100x100metres and as can be seen was ablaze from end to end.

A CPL aims a jet inside the building. The gable end of the building is actually in the centre of the building. Parts of the building were collapsing throughout the blaze.

Here west 1-bravo is seenattacking the blaze. There were three CPL's (or ALP's) in attendance at this incident, West 1 Bravo (Birkenhead), North 3 Bravo (Croxteth) and North 7 Bravo (Southport).

Part of the line up of appliances at the street entrance. You may be able to see a Dennis Sabre, Dennis SS and in the distance one of the 6 new Scania appliances.

Here West 6 Zulu Incident Command & Control Unit is seen in full glory! As you can see it carries some pretty bright lights on the roof! In front of the IC&CU is West 6-2 the support pump which provides the crew for the IC&CU.

  • 26th February 2002 - Make Pumps 7 Aerials 2

  • At approx 23:00 hrs a fire brokeout in an unoccupied wharehouse in Bridgewater Street, Liverpool City Centre. The PDA of 3 pumps and 1 aerial were sent and as Central 3 Bravo was off the run and West 1 Bravo was on another call, North 3 (Croxteth)'s aerial was turned out.  Pumps were made 5 shortly afterwards. The first floor collapsed and machines were withdrawn due to the possible collapse of the building. The police helicopter informed the brigade that all floors were now showing signs of severe heat and the fire quickly spread through the floors before breaking through the roof.

  • With Make Pumps 5, the command and control unit turned out with West 6 2 as the support pump. West 6 - 2 is seen here in front of the ICCU with the building in the backround. Pumps were then made 7 to try and protect the surrounding buildings before aerials were made 2.

Due to the building being in a dangerous state, 3 Ground Moniters were used in addition to the CPL moniters. One of the ground moniters can be seen here protecting the building to the side of the wharehouse.

Here is a picture from the other side of the building. The CPL is seen attacking the blaze, and protecting the buildings to this side of the fire.

West 1 - 2 was one of the appliances turned out at make pumps 7. It is seen here arriving at the RV point and about to receive its orders. West 1 Bravo was not far behind.

One of the loading bays is seen here - more like an oven than a loading bay! The building was 100% involved in fire and the floors collapsed down as the night wore on.

Side view of the building - later in the night. The flames are no longer shooting into the air, although every time a jet was directed into the building, showers of sparks lit up the night sky. One of the CPLs can be seen to the right of the picture.

A further appliance arrives at the scene. To the left of this vehicle is one of Merseyside Polices' CCTV vans.

The two CPL's are seen here in action. Sparks light up the sky as the jets are directed downwards.

    Fire Dock Road, Wallasey 24/08/01.
At approx. 13:30 the brigade was mobilised to a warehouse on fire, Dock Road, Wallasey (near the four bridges). Unfortunately I couldn't get there until 14:30 (work!) so I only caught the closing stages. This was a make pumps 4, cpl's 1.

Here the CPL is seen cooling the collapsed front of the warehouse. The road, which is quite a busy thoroughfare, was closed for some time as the cpl was got to work.

West 1-Bravo (the CPL) is seen here inspecting the roof of the building. Steam can still be seen issuing.

West 1-1 provided water from a nearby hydrant. This is of course one of the new Scania appliances which the brigade has just purchased. Here the crews are seen making up hose before returning to station.

16th May 2001 -

  • Make pumps 12,

  • CPL's 2

  • Chemical Incident Unit

  • Hose Layer

  • Command & Control Unit,

This is a chemical incident in BASF Seacombe, Wirral. which makes the absorbent part of nappies. As can be seen a serious fire broke out. It is believed that the fire started after the gas being pumped into an oven under pressure ignited injuring 2 workers. The building suffered major damage in this fire and nearby locals were removed from the surrounding areas due to the possibility of explosion

Although you cant see it in these views, 2xCPL's were on site. They weren't used until a few hours after the call due to the danger to firefighters.

This picture shows the side of the main building which was later burnt out. Notice the different shades of smoke in all these pictures - from dark black to bright white. All crews were withdrawn at one point due to the danger of collapse.

Here fire has broken through the side wall of the wharehouse. One of the CPL's on site is setting up to the right of the picture.

A view taken towards the end of the job. The smoke is still spiralling skywards. The police car from Merseyside Police is travelling to enforce the road closure.
This fire unfortunately resulted in the closure of the plant with the workforce being made redundant. The plant has since been demolished because of the amount of structual damage caused by the blaze.

  • This is a make pumps 4 in Moreton, Merseyside. The building involved is a crane hire firm with the fire starting in the workshop area to the rear. Large volumes of smoke drifted across several local roads and set off a fire alarm in a nearby factory which makes........yep fire alarms!!

  • Appliances attending:-
    • West 1.2 - Birkenhead's Pump
    • West 4.1 - Upton's Pump
    • West 6.1 - Wallasey's Pump Ladder
    • West 6.2 - Wallasey's Pump

1999 Chemical Fire - Speke (South Liverpool)

This is the view of a chemical fire taken in about 1999 from the approach roads.  The incident was a ten pumper. Here you can see one of South 6 (Toxteth)'s machines en-route.

Here is a view of the same incident but taken from a bit nearer. Part of the attendance was as follows:-

south 6-1 & south 6-2 (Toxteth)

south 2-1 & south 2-2 (Speke)

south 1-1 (Allerton)

south 9-1 (Belle-Vale)

In this image you can seethe inside of the warehouse after the fire. As you can see the roof has almost completely burnt away and has collapsed.

Here is another view showing the devastation caused by fire.

BITS AND BOBS!
These are odd pictures that I have been sent and I have chosen to include. I will credit people if they ask nicely!!

A dramatic picture from Mr A Daley. Flames shoot from the roof of a block of flats as firefighters get a jet to work and attack the blaze.

A couple of  my pictures from a warehouse fire in Liverpool City Centre - near to the Norton street coach depot. This view shows one of the brigades CPL'c silhouetted against a ball of fire.

This picture is a close up view of the "cage" of the above CPL and shows the water spray from the moniter lit up by the flames.

Recently a 4 pump fire occured at West 6's ground. This was not far from the BASF fire above. The fire was in an unoccupied warehouse previously occupied by.......UNIQUE FIRES.

Here West 1 Bravo (Birkenheads CPL) is seen attacked the blaze from above. Note the sign on the side of the building!!

The Next three pictures are from Chris Tunstall. He works near to this incident which is a DIY shop on New Chester Road, Rock Ferry.

This view shows smoke issuing from the premises. Firefighters are gaining entry to the front of the shop. Appliances attending were West 1-1 and West 2-2.

The view from the other side of the road. West 1-1 (scania) can just be seen to the right of the picture.

This view shows the steam rising as the firefighters attack the blaze.

Smoke rises from an incident in Hunts Cross, South Liverpool. Corrugated Plastic on fire. Smoke visible from Chester right through to New Brighton!
